The stress response is well known as the fight or flight syndrome. It's an instinctive response to what the body thinks is danger.

At one time, the wild human needed this response as a necessary inner survival mechanism whose strategy was birthed into the species so it wouldn't go extinct. In today's world, this inner stress response seems to be partially responsible for the current illnesses of our society as this once vital mechanism is now malfunctioning. This is because it never gets shut off, and in some, it is even activated when the person is asleep. Being constantly provoked by the stresses of money pressures, un-ending lines of traffic, and the burdens of relationships, work and children, this once vital mechanism is now in overdrive and most don't even know how to shut down.

Prolonged stress disorders have been identified as an immune system suppressant, a high blood pressure trigger, relentless sleep and anxiety condition initiator, and a contributing factor in things like chronic depression and heart disease.

When a person is in the stress response, they have very shallow breath which is called upper chest breathing. This type of breathing increases tension and anxiety.

The opposite of the stress response is the relaxation response which can be brought on through deep breathing techniques. The relaxation response is a purposely created condition brought on through breathing and meditation which switches off the stress response and brings on deep and profound peace.
